Subject: Misdirected police powers

The Editor,

The Guardian,

Sir,

Misdirected police powers

The climate protesters are only having to take direct action on airports because the government is acting 'plane stupid' in supporting more runways in abject contradiction to the onset of dangerous climate change, and takes no notice of public petitions and demonstrations.  They are acting in the long term public interest which the government has abandoned.  This situation is leading to the police supporting the wrong interests, in blindly serving the interests of the state against the interest of its people.  The government is misdirecting the police and the latter are acting as if the protesters are terrorists instead of the protectors of humanity and other life forms ('Police: we have network of informers among protesters' Guardian 25 April 2009).

It is time both government and police wise up to this situation.  It has got to stop.  It is sheer folly!

Yours faithfully,
Jim Scott,
