Julie, I have run SPM5 and SPM8b successfully on MATLAB R2008a and R2008a_64 on both an Intel iMac and Intel Mac Pro. With the 32 bit Intel versions, the compiled mex files supplied with SPM are good. If you want to run 64-bit MATLAB (recommended, since for whatever reason, the 32 bit version is VERY slow compared to linux and Windows versions), then you will need to compile the mex files for your system, which is not difficult.
