I actually did make the mistake of punctuation but found myself staging a control Z retreat. The concrete fact is that text such as this cannot be punctuated. To attempt to do so breaks free indirect style in this case. Having accepted this reality we could look at the nature of the poetics to ascertain what the question may be. Lyric as the direct address of the subjective voice of the poet finds itself in contradiction to free indirect discourse. First, as first person voice lyric cannot be free, lyric is direct address and so is not indirect and lyric is not discursive or dialogue and so cannot be discourse. However, despite this triad of contradictions free indirect discourse can still present as both potential and actual lyric. Logic can already tell us this much, for starters. So how is poetics to understand this? best, Chris Jones.
