As a point of information, the UK system isn't (socialised medicine,
anyone?), of course, free, but _free (well, mostly) at the point of use_ --
everyone who works pays National Insurance Contributions.

Oddly enough, for all the complaints I've ever encountered about the UK NHS,
I've never encountered (at least in the last 50 years) one which complains
that those who work subsidise the health benefits of those who don't.

It's simply taken as a given that basic health is provided to all.

(It becomes a bit more complicated when you're retired, whereupon whether or
not it becomes worth continuing to pay National Insurance Contributions
depends on how long you think you'll live beyond the age of 60 for females,
65 for males.)
