Re: [OCC-HEALTH] use of gloves when vaccinating? This is helpful and useful advice – but it is still venepuncture not giving vaccinations.

Hi, whilst using gloves for venepuncture, but not for vaccines thought I’d search for RCN advice.

In 2005, for their competencies : “An education and training competency framework for capillary blood sampling and venepuncture in children and young adults” their competency requires the person to “demonstrate the correct procedures for minimising infection, including hand washing, use of gloves, apron and aseptic technique”. This is what our host Trust has advised too, but at present discussions are being held re the unique environment of OH, not patients, but well clients and risks of infections hopefully should be lower than in a ward environment.

Interesting debate

Hiya Glenn,

How does the glove remove 80% (ish) of blood from the needle bore?

The needles we use are hollow bore and most of the blood is removed from the outside of the needle when it is removed from the skin.

Hollow bore needles carry the highest amount of risk when transmitting BBV’s

The blood inside the hollow bore cannot be removed from the inside of the needle by a glove or any other form of PPE.

It is therefore useless to wear gloves other than as a physical barrier between you and the patient.

Therefore in my honest opinion GLOVES ARE USELESS in protecting the wearer from the risks of transmitting BBV’s from a needle.

However, I wear gloves for dressings, spillages and other such instances when I need a physical barrier.

Nuff said

Bless ya

Neil, Matron, my buddy!

The use of a glove, was I thought, to remove 80% (ish) of blood in the needle bore.

We too are bare below the elbow, and wash hands before and after each patient with soap and water, but aprons?? What's the reason for this?
