British Sign Language Corpus Project: Research Associate (Deaf Community Fieldworker) School of Management and Languages Salary: £23,449 - £27,182 pro rata (1-3 months full-time/part-time) Based in Newcastle The British Sign Language Corpus Project is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. This new project aims to create a corpus (i.e. a computerised collection of languages recordings) of British Sign Language (BSL), and to carry out research into the vocabulary, grammar and sociolinguistic variation in BSL. The project is led by the Deafness Cognition and Languages (DCAL) Research Centre at University College London, in partnership with Heriot-Watt University (Scotland), Queens University Belfast (Northern Ireland), the University of Bristol (England), Bangor University (Wales) and Macquarie University (Australia). The post for the Newcastle area will be employed by and under the Terms and conditions of Heriot-Watt University. The work will begin in April/May 2009. Hours are flexible, and work will be contracted to the equivalent of four weeks (minimum) full time work (150 hours). We are looking for well organised Deaf people with a thorough knowledge of their local Deaf community and native signing skills in BSL to assist the BSL Corpus Project team.
