Dear Colleagues, The Centre for Longitudinal Studies will be holding the following workshops: 19th March 2009 1958 National Child Development Study (NCDS) and 1970 British Cohort Study (BCS70): a workshop for potential users <http://www.cls.ioe.ac.uk/newsletter_clickthrough.asp?section=0001000100 04&item=816&eventType=events&userID=66> (www.cls.ioe.ac.uk/ncdsbcswkshp) On Thursday March 19 2009, CLS will hold a one-day introductory workshop on the 1958 National Child Development Study (NCDS) and the 1970 British Cohort Study (BCS70). This event is open to researchers considering using data from the most recent sweeps of the surveys. The taught component of the workshop includes: survey design, data coverage and methodology; patterns of attrition; an introduction to the Idealist data dictionary and accessing the data via ESDS. During the hands-on component participants will have the opportunity to carry out SPSS or Stata analyses using sub-sets of NCDS/BCS70 data, with support from members of the CLS cohort studies team. 24th March 2009 Millennium Cohort Study Introductory Workshop <http://www.cls.ioe.ac.uk/events.asp?section=000100010004&item=832> (www.cls.ioe.ac.uk/mcsworkshop) This workshop will discuss the age 5 MCS data. It will include presentations on the MCS survey; the MCS sample and issues of weights, response, non-response and attrition; and how to access data from the UK Data Archive. In the afternoon, computer workshops will cover a range of topics including linking data from all three sweeps; recoding variables; deriving new variables; examining frequencies and percentages; correlation and regression; how issues of weighting affect results; how to measure attrition and the implications this may have for research.
