Statistician- (Cambridge)

£25,622 to £29,514 per annum

The MRC Biostatistics Unit aims to advance medical science by the
development, application and dissemination of statistical methods. It is
one of Europe’s leading biostatistics research institutions and includes
many internationally renowned statisticians. It provides a privileged
environment for conducting research, with negligible administration, no
requirement to teach, and access to important applications of high public
interest.

We seek a statistician to work within the programme Evidence Synthesis in
Clinical Trials and Human Genome Epidemiology, led by Julian Higgins. You
will contribute to development of statistical methods for meta-analysis,
evidence synthesis and health technology appraisal, with particular
applications in clinical trials and human genome epidemiology. This will
constitute methodological research, empirical research and collaboration on
applied projects. Possible areas of work include synthesis of heterogeneous
clinical trials, meta-analysis of multiple genetic markers, missing data in
meta-analysis and evaluation of genetic tests. You will be able to pursue
individual research interests relevant to the themes of the programme.

We welcome applications from both recent doctoral students and candidates
with significant relevant post doctoral experience. For those that have
recently obtained a doctoral qualification we will offer a three year Fixed
Term Career Development Fellow position, which will be a training and
developmental post. Alternatively, applications made by individuals with
extensive relevant post‑doctoral experience will be considered for an
open-ended investigator scientist contract.

You should have either a PhD in Statistics or equivalent experience in
medical statistics or a related discipline with a large mathematical
component. You will need good statistical computing skills and experience
in statistical packages, such as STATA or R; a strong interest in
application of statistical methods in health research and epidemiology;
excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently. It
would be useful if you also have some experience in clinical trials or
genetic epidemiology and knowledge of the Cochrane Collaboration.

You will need good interpersonal skills to develop working relationships
inside and outside the unit; to be a committed team member with flexible
approach to work; to be well organised; to give attention to detail and to
have high standards.
