At the moment we require individual departments to
fund any costs that aren't met by Access to Work. The problems is that
we have no way of equal treatment across all departments. Also given
financial constraints, disabled members of staff may feel reluctant to
request equipment when it has to come out of an already tight
department budget, and may fear that this will create resentment from
other staff. I'm keen for us to move towards the model of central
finance.
The Disability Equality Implementation Group (including ECU
representation), which is charge with taking forward the
recommendations of the Commission for Disabled Staff in Lifelong
Learning, wants universities to sign up to the Disability Equality
Commitment in Lifelong Learning to review and implement the disability
equality recomendations. One of these is to finance reasonable
adjustments centrally so that no department or faculty is
disadvantaged, financially of otherwise, in meeting disability equality
responsibilities.

I, too, would be interested in what's happening elsewhere.

I would also be interested in responses to this question and would also like to hear from institutions where it is the responsibility of the individual department and what issues arise from that.
Many thanks

Subject: Paying for reasonable adjustments
I would be interested in how your university pays for reasonable
adjustments for staff with disabilities. Here we do not have a central
pot, each department pays individually.
For those of you who have a central pot:
1. How is this funded?
2. How are applications made to it?
3. Is there a cap on how much monetary assistance is given to each
department/individual?
Thanks
