Hello Eleni,

For the pig mandible it would be a good idea to check it with
Actinomyces - a bacteria that can do some serious damage to the
mandible. This infection can get inot the jaws of pig, cattle, deer and
even people by sharp pieces of grain piercing the gums as well as from
infected teeth or a fracture. I have some pictures of an archaeological
pig that I could send you to compare with yours and some modern papers
on the infection.

Best wishes, Julie

Subject: [ZOOARCH] Pathological bos vertebra? Pig mandible fractures

Dear zooarchaeologists,

this vertebra is from a neolithic site in Greece. Does it have
exostoses? Link:

I, also, wanted to ask you: fractures in pig mandibles are caused by
what mostly? Other animals? Pigs? Man? Accidents? I have a pig mandible
with healed fracture+infection (swollen bone=abscess) and tooth loss.

Thank you
Eleni Samartzidou
