JOB OPPORTUNITY: Scientific Communications Officer, MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine

£29,704 - £35,469 (pro rata for 28hrs per week)

The MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine is a flagship
initiative whose portfolio spans world leading fundamental research on normal
and malignant stem cells through to translational and preclinical research and
phase I clinical trials. Our mission is to gain fundamental understanding of
stem cells, to use this knowledge to improve human health, and to provide
leadership in training the next generation of basic and clinical scientists in
stem cell biology and regenerative medicine (http://www.scrm.ed.ac.uk/)

You will join the MRC-CRM to take responsibility for the
delivery of scientific communication and outreach activities. Responsible for
proactive collation and dissemination of information on all aspects of stem cell
research and regenerative medicine and related ethical and societal topics, you
will have already demonstrated a flair for developing science communication
tools and for presenting science to audiences at educational levels ranging from
school students to scientists, clinicians and regulators. Together with the
Centre Communications and Outreach coordinator you will build on the centre’s
highly successful public engagement and outreach programmes, designed to promote
public awareness and understanding in the stem cell field. Working closely with
our researchers and the university’s press office you will be responsible for
ensuring that our work receives appropriate media coverage.

Previous experience in scientific communications is
essential and candidates qualified to degree or equivalent level in
communications or journalism are encouraged to apply. Experience of writing
press releases and writing for the web is essential, as is a demonstrable
capacity to reach a wide range of target audiences. Experience of producing AV
materials would also be valuable. Background knowledge of stem cell, regenerative
medicine and/or broader biomedical science would also be a significant
advantage. Informal enquiries should be directed in the first instance to Dr
Gordon McLean ([log in to unmask]).
