A Postdoctoral Research Associate appointment is available in the laboratory of Professor Sara M. Vaiana in the Center for Biological Physics and Department of Physics at Arizona State University in Tempe AZ. Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in physics, biophysics, opto-electrical engineering, chemical physics, biochemistry, or related fields and must be interested in working within a highly collaborative, strongly interdisciplinary team. Required areas of expertise are one or more of the following: • Design and construction of novel instrumentation, including but not limited to fast laser pump-probe techniques, time resolved spectroscopy or light scattering; strong computer programming skills, with prior experience in LabView and Matlab programming desired. • Quantitative spectroscopy applied to protein folding, conformational dynamics or aggregation; handling of biological samples; peptide synthesis and purification. • Light scattering techniques applied to polymer physics, colloids, phase transition theory and self-assembly. The successful candidate will work in a new state-of-the-art laboratory within the Physics Department (http://physics.asu.edu/) and the Center for Biological Physics (http://biophysics.asu.edu/CBP/) of Arizona State University, in close contact with other biochemistry, experimental and theoretical physics groups of the CBP. The laboratory is dedicated to the study of protein solutions on two spatio-temporal scales (intra- and inter-molecular). To learn more about our research visit http://physics2.asu.edu/svaiana/Home.html?q=svaiana/Home.html. Excellent drafting and communication skills in English are highly desired. The position can begin as early as Mar 2009. Although the initial appointment will be for one year, an extension to a second or third year may be made by mutual agreement and based on availability of funds. Complete applications will include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research experience, and contact details of three references (postal and email address and phone number).
