APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING Digital natives - myth and reality Date: Tuesday 10 March 2009 Time: 6.30pm Venue: The Sekforde Arms, Sekforde Street, London EC1 Map: http://digbig.com/3pmf Speaker: Neil Selwyn, London Knowledge Lab, Institute of Education. 'Digital natives' have grown up with digital technology. They multitask: downloading tracks, uploading photos, emailing, texting, messaging. Reading or watching TV is too slow and boring. Some commentators even see this as the next step in brain evolution! How realistic is the image? What does it tell us about the realities of the young as users of digital technology and digital information? Looking back to the 1970s and beyond, Neil will ask why such stories of technologically-empowered young people continue to be taken seriously. He will examine the part information professionals need to play to support the young in the digital age. Neil Selwyn is Senior Lecturer at the London Knowledge Lab, Institute of Education, where his work focuses on the sociology of technology. This talk will be of particular value to anyone registered for CILIP Chartership and can contribute towards CPD requirements. CILIP in London evening meetings are free and open to all with a professional interest in the topic. Refreshments will be available afterwards.
