Alien Invaders
Thursday 5th March, 6.30pm
If you thought alien invaders only existed in science fiction, think
again.
They are all around us, in the forms of exotic animals and plants
transported beyond
their natural limits by humans, often with disastrous consequences.
But which species become invaders, and how?
What happens when an animal sets up camp in a foreign land?
Prof. Tim Blackburn will show how human desires and the species’
characteristics
connect to drive the process of alien invasion, as illustrated by birds.
Tim Blackburn is Director of the Institute of Zoology at the Zoological
Society of London,
and honorary professor at the Universities of Oxford and Birmingham.
His latest book, Avian Invaders: The Ecology and Evolution of Exotic
Birds, will be
published by OUP in May 2009.
Following the talk, join us for a free glass of wine in a private view of
the Museum.
This event is free and there is no need to book
Animal Adventures Season

when they get there.
This series investigates the stories and the science of journeys taken by
