The link between roads and the military goes at least as far as the Romans but their impacts (both positive and negative) are much more broad ranging. The Newbury bypass (as it turns out) was not used to enable the use of cruise missiles; but it has changed the social structure of this area substantially and it is a daily part of life for many many people. I spent a good deal of time on it last year and the gash through the hill is always striking depending on my mood brings melancholy or nostalgia (Canadian roads being terribly terrain oblivious for completely different reasons) Dissent is an important part of understanding motorways and other contemporary roads, but the continuing experience of them is important as well
