Did anyone go to this seminar? _____ From: The Black and Asian Studies Association [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Caroline Bressey Sent: 23 February 2009 16:37 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Fwd: Marc Matera * http://www.history.ac.uk/aac2009/abstracts/cosmopolitan-cities.html Marc Matera (Northern Arizona University), Black Internationalism and Cosmopolitan London in the 1930s and 1940s My paper comes from the manuscript for a book entitled London and the Rise of Black Internationalism. A global city and the capital of the far-flung British Empire, London became the frontline in the black struggle against British imperialism and racism during the 1930s. Caribbean and African intellectuals, university students, artists and activists in London formed organisations that became homes away from home, centres of cultural and intellectual exchange, and new means of voicing social commentary and political dissent. Through them, they influenced the political imagination of British colonial officials, politicians, and others interested in Africa and the colonies, contributing to the major fluctuations in colonial policy in the final decades of imperial rule. Many Caribbean and African men and women embraced black internationalism as an expression of the spirit of the age and a necessary counter to the resurgence of virulent nationalisms and the potential internationalisation of imperialism for the first time within the citys cosmopolitan environs. From the West African Students Union in Camden Town to cramped apartments in Euston and Hampstead, from the university seminar to Sohos nightclubs, London played a central role in the development of black internationalism because of the conversations, alliances, and boundary crossings which only the metropole made possible. This history transforms our understanding of the development of anticolonialism as well as the cultural landscape of late imperial London. ------=_NextPart_000_0021_01C9967C.00B3E330 Content-Type: text/html; Marika Referring to Marika's original post, I think it depends on what is being meant by 'general ignorance'. Inter-war 'black internationalism' almost certainly is underplayed in 'public knowledge' - it is rarely discussed in the press, and as far as I'm aware it doesn't feature on school curricula - it certainly wasn't on the history syllabus when I studied at school around 10 years ago. But then, this tends to be the case with much history of this sort. Stephen Boune's recent comments on his work not being reviewed in the mainstream press, made on this list, are emblematic of this absence I think. It was also notable that, in the British Library's recent 'Taking Liberties' exhibition on the struggle for rights in Britain, I didn't notice anything at all on inter-war and war-time struggles over the 'colour bar' (although I may have missed them - I did farely race round the exhibition. I don't suppose anybody else got to see it and give it more time?) If this is the case, it would appear that there may well still be 'general ignorance' on the matter. As far as the academy goes, despite the best efforts of BASA members and others, I think there's still work to be done on inter-war black history. With the emergence (or perhaps we should say, re-emergence) over the last few years of 'black internationalism' and 'black transnationalism' as fields of inquiry - exemplary examples of which might be Brent Edwards' The Practice of Diaspora and Michelle Stephens' Black Empire and Kevin Gaines' American Africans in Ghana - there seems to be an opportunity for a re-examination of inter-war black internationalisms in their various manifestations, both in Britain and beyond. I most certainly see it as a positive that sessions are now being organised at conferences such as this which account for these multiple, 'cosmopolitan' histories, and don't just end up 'whitewashing' the past. Of course, these academic developments still need to find more ways of being made more openly 'public'. I'd also second Sean Creghton's suggestion of a roundtable to discuss these issues. I think this would be useful not just for Marc Matera, but for many others as well and also for BASA. It would also overlap with some of the things being brought up at the current set of BASA seminars. (I'm thinking esecially of the papers on the NWA and the West Indian Students Union). Inter-war ‘black internationalism’ almost certainly is underplayed in ‘public knowledge’ – it is rarely discussed in the press, and as far as I’m aware it doesn’t feature on school curricula – it certainly wasn’t on the history syllabus when I studied at school around 10 years ago. But then, this tends to be the case with much history of this sort. Stephen Boune’s recent comments on his work not being reviewed in the mainstream press, made on this list, are emblematic of this absence I think. It was also notable that, in the British Library's recent ‘Taking Liberties’ exhibition on the struggle for rights in Britain, I didn’t notice anything at all on inter-war and war-time struggles over the ‘colour bar’ (although I may have missed them – I did farely race round the exhibition. I don’t suppose anybody else got to see it and give it more time?) If this is the case, it would appear that there may well still be ‘general ignorance’ on the matter. <br> <br> As far as the academy goes, despite the best efforts of BASA members and others, I think there’s still work to be done on inter-war black history. With the emergence (or perhaps we should say, re-emergence) over the last few years of ‘black internationalism’ and ‘black transnationalism’ as fields of inquiry – exemplary examples of which might be Brent Edwards’ The Practice of Diaspora and Michelle Stephens’ Black Empire and Kevin Gaines’ American Africans in Ghana – there seems to be an opportunity for a re-examination of inter-war black internationalisms in their various manifestations, both in Britain and beyond. I most certainly see it as a positive that sessions are now being organised at conferences such as this which account for these multiple, ‘cosmopolitan’ histories, and don’t just end up ‘whitewashing’ the past. Of course, these academic developments still need to find more ways of being made more openly 'public'.<br> <br> I'd also second Sean Creghton's suggestion of a roundtable to discuss these issues. I think this would be useful not just for Marc Matera, but for many others as well and also for BASA. It would also overlap with some of the things being brought up at the current set of BASA seminars. I had gone to the kitchen for some boiled water and the lads at the camp told the man that I was from Kenya. We chatted away in KiSwahili and he told me he had been in the Rhodesia Regiment of the KAR (Kings African Rifles) and had served in Tanganyika and Kenya in the First World War - This was in 1990 and the man was quite old - so I doubt he is alive now. But it was so great to hear of his experiences. There is a book in the Imperial War Museum library on WWI troops for Kenya. There was one on Uganda too, but when I was last there, this book had vanished!
