CALL FOR PAPERS

Representations of Diversity: Racism and the Media in Italy

The American University of Rome's Center for Research on Racism in Italy
will hold its second one-day conference on April 3, 2009 on the topic of
representations of minorities and migrants in the Italian mass media.

The conference will address the issue of racism in all forms of Italian
media, past and present, including the internet and advertising. It will
also examine the development of media created by and for minorities and
migrants in Italy and other forms of positive representations. Key questions
for discussion will include whether there is an adequate legal and
institutional framework for combating racism in the media. Papers addressing
the media representation of racism in the past are also invited. In addition
to the scholarly presentations, journalists, INGO representatives and civil
society activists will be invited to contribute their perspectives.

The conference will be held in English. Proposals (c. 300 words) are invited
from both established and unpublished scholars in the relevant disciplines
and should be sent to:

James Walston [log in to unmask]
Isabella Clough Marinaro [log in to unmask]

Deadline for proposals: 27 February 2009
