I received this information via Arts Greenwich, through a mailing from Arthur Torrington, who has conducted extensive research into Equiano in a wide range of  archive repositories.

 

 

OLAUDAH EQUIANO: WESTMINSTER ABBEY PLAQUE

 Born in Africa, enslaved at aged 11, served in the Royal Navy,

bought his freedom in Montserrat (West Indies) in 1766,

and became a Writer, Businessman and an Abolitionist.

A MEMORIAL PLAQUE WILL BE UNVEILED ON

MONDAY 9 FEBRUARY 2009 at a

DEDICATION SERVICE at ST MARGARET’S CHURCH,

WESTMINSTER ABBEY from 6.30pm to 8pm.

 Equiano was baptised Gustavus Vassa in the Church on

9 February 1759 (250 years to the day). He is the first

person of African origin to be honoured at the Abbey.

THE PLAQUE HAS BEEN MADE BY MARCIA BENNETT-MALE,

A BLACK FEMALE ARTIST & STONE CARVER BASED IN SOUTH LONDON.

Contributors to the event include:
