Thanks so much for the
Scigen site – it’s great fun! I have just written
the following paper, together with my dog, cat, horse, and husband. I am
looking forward to presenting it at a conference soon
A* search and vacuum tubes, while practical in theory,
have not until recently been considered natural. in this paper, we disprove the
deployment of local-area networks. Skeine, our new algorithm for perfect
modalities, is the solution to all of these issues.

Scrotumgate and gaiety
Hi,
The whole Sokal affair,
and “scrotumgate”, always reminds me of Scigen:
http://pdos.csail.mit.edu/scigen/
The brief for those who
haven’t heard of it: some MIT comp sci grad students wrote software that
automatically authors papers. They submitted one for a conference and gave
three Scigen-generated talks with generated text and slides.
You can go on the site
and make your own!
Cheers, Jon

Good call I had
totally forgotten about that one – Dawkins refers to it his book of
essays A Devil’s Chaplain (I think!!) This one was really trying to
prove a point though wasn’t it, scrotumgate was just about humour..

How does this compare
with the Sokal Affair that played such a big role in the 'Science Wars'? (I'll
give the wikipedia reference, but I'm sure there are many others:

makes me wonder how common spoofs of this kind are in STM journals. Anyone have
an inkling? Are all scientists, engineers, medics, journal editors as happy to
accept it it as merely adding to the gaiety of life as the BMJ spokesperson
quoted on BBC News. What about the authors of the admittedly lighthearted paper
published as a Christmas 2008 feature in the BMJ that shamed Murphy into her
confession?
