Not quite the same...  but  here in NSW Australia, "Bull Horns" was (and 
still is) the name commonly given to the removable steel stakes which 
restrain loads of (say) timber on mine cars. Also length of steel inserted 
in holes in the strata to temporarily support cross timber whilst vertical 
legs being set.
