There were a few horses used underground at Nenthead, but only on the 
main haulage ways, these horns were found in the 'flat' workings there 
would be no horses there.

The Nenthead pattern of carbide lamp was quite large and robust and the 
top would come off completely to reveal the carbide chamber, the 
diameter of which would be wider than a horn, so probably not for 
loading lamps either, in this case.
