Birmingham Evening Discussion Group – What is Literacy in HE Today?
This first Birmingham Evening Discussion Group will be convened by Prof. David Roberts (Newman University College). The purpose is simply to share ideas about teaching with colleagues from across the Midlands in an informal atmosphere. The first session will focus on student literacy.

Reading, Writing and Reflecting: a workshop for not-so-new lecturers
This workshop is offered to all those colleagues who have attended one of the Subject Centre’s annual ‘New Lecturer’ Conferences held in Birmingham or Nottingham. It offers the opportunity to step back briefly from the day to day rush in order to reflect upon your subsequent experience of teaching and academic life.

Networking Day for Heads of English
This is an annual event creating an opportunity for those who lead departments to share ideas, experiences and concerns. The focus is on informal networking and exchange in a relaxed context. We do not arrange external speakers, but consult participants in advance about the issues they wish to discuss and arrange the programme accordingly.

The Doctor’s Dilemma: a new pedagogy for the PhD in English studies?
This event will look at the future development of the PhD in English studies, particularly how it relates to knowledge transfer through such initiatives as the AHRC Collaborative Fellowships. Some time will be given to post-doctoral fellowships and their implications for departments and individual careers. The event will also include case-studies and discussion on topics related to current practice.

A Special Relationship? Teaching English with Media Studies
This event will provide a space to explore the relationship between the disciplines of English and Media Studies in terms of: programme design and content; teaching methodologies; and the place of theory in the syllabus. It is of interest to those who teach on further and higher education programmes which offer any kind of combination of the two subjects, English and Media Studies.
