Whilst I am very concerned about the people in Palestine, who we see on our televisions and I heartily agree with our putting out a statement demonstrating our disagreement with the persecution being enacted before our eyes, I am also concerned about the situation in Zimbabwe which we are NOT seeing and which is NOT being reported on, I wonder does anyone share my concerns about a people who are effectively being wiped out by the Zanu PF, Mugabe and cholera!

I think that meets all the objections about implied militarism of the statement and focuses on State power rather than the Israeli people not all of whom are complicit.I'm happy to work with Paul and any others on getting this out as widely as possible.See my subsequent post for a comment on the politics of this kind of action.MarkDiamond Bob wrote:

Let’s not talk much more about the exact wording etc, I think the statement is more than good enough, Thank you Paul. Just release it…as we more than suspect just in itself it probably won’t cause a ripple but better that it’s out there. There’s also more local protests to join and donations to MAP

From Paul Duckett (having difficulty sending to list)----Original Message-----From: Paul@home [mailto:[log in to unmask]]Sent: 17 January 2009 20:20To: The UK Community Psychology Discussion ListSubject: RE: [COMMUNITYPSYCHUK] The War in Gaza

Yes, Wendy, I absolutely agree.

Here is a possible statement we might work on as a list (quickly). It is based on statements issued by other orgs - a statement in the Guardian (friday) and a statement made by the Right to Education Campaign). If we agree something like this, I suggest we send it to No.10, the Foreign Office, various organisations working in the Gaza Strip and to national and international orgs of CP's (see if we can attempt a global CP voice on this one to replace the CPUK in teh statement with CP's of the world! )

CPUK statement of support and solidarity with the people of Gaza.
Community Psychologists in the UK (CPUK) extend their support and solidarity for the people of Gaza. We call upon the British government and the British people to take all feasible steps, beginning with immediate boycotts, divestments and sanctions against the state of Israel, to oblige Israel's political admnistration to: abide by international law; dismantle its apartheid regime spanning both the occupied territories and Israel; immediately and unconditionally end its assault on Gaza; end the occupation of the West Bank; abandon all claims to possess or control territory beyond its 1967 borders; and commit to pursuing a long-lasting, just peace.
CPUK denounces as war crimes and crimes against humanity the disproportionality of Israel's attacks on Gaza, which includes the indiscriminate killing of the men, women and children of Gaza. The Israeli Defence Force deliberately: targets hospitals, civilian shelters and prevents medical aid reaching the injured and medical supplies and equipment from entering the Gaza Strip; uses white phosphorous munitions in civilian areas; and destroys Gaza's infrastructure of roads, water supplies, sanitation, food production, food distribution, food security, electricity, social services, education services, health services, law and order, housing, environmental services, and broader social support structures. These actions indicate the Israeli political administration's genocidal intentions towards the people of Palestine.
The massacre of civilians in in Gaza is the latest phase of a war that successive governments of Israel (supported by the USA and Britain) have been waging against the people of Palestine for more than 60 years. The goal of this war has never changed: to use overwhelming military power to eradicate the Palestinians as a political force capable of resisting Israel's ongoing appropriation of Palestinian land and resources. CPUK believes that for the sake of justice and global peace, Israel must lose this war. Our belief in the right of the Palestinian's to democratic self-determinantion, and to resist military aggression and colonial occuption, obligises us to take the side of the people of Gaza and the West Bank and to side against Israel.

Hello all. The list has been silent about the war in Gaza. It feels hard to know what to say, and the killing continues. I'm horrified by the news every day. I've done little things like writing letters with the Amnesty and Avaaz campaigns, tried to attend a local demonstration (another story!), made a donation to support humanitarian aid in Gaza. I would appreciate if anyone had any other thoughts, suggestions or ideas to share? Or even if others who haven't been involved yet, and would like to, could take a few minutes to check out the Amnesty website: http://www.amnesty.org.uk/index.asp and the Avaaz website: http://www.avaaz.org/en/gaza_time_for_peace/?cl=170174582&v=2689Best wishes to all, Wendy
