Texthelp
is probably one of the TTS resources best known to colleges in this neck of the
woods Matt.
You
could try Claro Read, a commercial resource. I’m sure
you could get your hands on a trial or demo version to try it out with your
student.

Other
free options include:
SpokenText
which is free and audio formats can be created from MS Word, PDF, RSS feeds,
email and WWW. For 25 Canadian Dollars you can buy a license for
SpokenText Plus which has more features.
I’ve
attached a handout which my colleague Craig Mill compiled which highlights other
free text to speech online resources.

Subject: Text-To -Speech Software
Hi
all,
Apologies for cross-posting.
I
am looking to buy some text-to-speech software and wonder if anyone has any
experiences, positive or negative, that they would like to share. Out and
out recommendations are also welcome. Also, if anyone is aware of any
packages that would work on the learner’s iPAQ too then even better, but
this isn’t essential.
At
present we have looked at DSpeech (which worked fine for reading text back, but
the learner was not keen on the voices) and I am currently considering Read and
Write Gold and GhostReader.
Many
thanks,
Matt
