Ipswich Record Office

Cataloguing Archivist

Full time

Salary £22,664 - £25,940

13 months fixed term contract

This is a significant opportunity for someone with enthusiasm for cataloguing to improve access to Suffolk Record Office collections.  Additional funding has been allocated by Suffolk County Council to reduce the cataloguing backlog.  The new catalogues created will be available online.

The ideal candidate will be able to work independently and as part of the Collections Team and have:

  • A degree and professional archive qualification.
  • Experience of cataloguing and indexing a wide range of collections within a defined brief, to professional standards using archival software, preferably CALM.
  • An excellent knowledge of archive and local history sources.
  • Good IT and time management skills to produce high quality work to strict targets and will be organised, methodical and self-motivated.  Accuracy in data entry is also required.
  • Highly developed problem solving skills to establish the arrangement of catalogues, inter-relationship of records within collections and between collections.
  • Manual handling skills and physical fitness to survey and sort collections prior to and during cataloguing and to oversee their packing, numbering and storage once catalogued.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills to provide professional guidance to volunteers, local communities and organisations involved in cataloguing and indexing and to establish a relationship of trust with depositors.
