Almost everything you always wanted to know about Deeds

“It is my strong opinion that deeds are still the ugly duckling of the record office ”. Kevin Ward, JSA Vol. 16, No 2, 1995

Training event by the Society of Archivists Northern region

February 25th, 2009,

11.30am – 4.15pm

Wakefield Registry of Deeds

Are deeds the ‘ugly duckling’ in your office, or do you wish you better understood the difference between a ‘lease and release’ and a ‘bargain and sale’?

This one day training course will offer archivists the chance to develop their knowledge of deeds and the Yorkshire Registers of Deeds. In particular it will include a practical workshop using the Registry of Deeds led by experienced staff, and information on using the Land Registry.

The training will be provided by experts in their fields and is ideally suited to archivists who feel they need a refresher course in deeds and conveyancing. The chance to use one of the Yorkshire Register of Deeds will be particularly appealing to archivists in the Yorkshire area, but all will find this a useful and informative day. The course is open to all archivists, associated professionals and paraprofessionals who are interested in improving their knowledge of deeds and the Register of Deeds.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Introduction to pre-registration title deeds and the appraisal of deeds.
  • Registration, the Land registry and how to access the information.
  • The Yorkshire Registries.
  • A practical workshop using the Wakefield Registry of Deeds.
