Statistical Genetics PhD opportunities in the MRC Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre, Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London The MRC Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre offers three-year PhD opportunities from Oct 2009 to investigate causes of psychiatric disease and behavioural disorders. Three-year projects include: * Statistical methods for analysing genome-wide association studies to identify susceptibility genes for psychiatric and neurological disorders ( psychosis, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, Motor Neuron Disease, addiction, and learning disabilities) * Development of novel methods for genetic epidemiology. Current research areas include risk prediction, gene-environment interaction, epistasis, endophenotypes, and the use of functional and pathway information. This PhD program offers opportunities for students with academic backgrounds in statistics, mathematics, computer science, bioinformatics, life sciences or physical sciences. Students must have a relevant educational qualifications, preferably an undergraduate degree with 2.1 or 1st class honours or a Master’s degree. Training in genetics will be given, where required. The MRC SGDP Centre is an interdisciplinary, collaborative research group that combines genetic and environmental strategies in order to study how nature and nurture interact in the development of complex behavioural dimensions and disorders. Students will be based in the Statistical Genetics Unit, a thriving research group with wide collaborations across King’s College London. Students are provided with first class supervision and training opportunities, and are actively encouraged to present their research at local, national and international level throughout their PhD. The research council studentship stipend will be paid at RCUK rates (currently £15,100 per annum) for the duration of the award. Limited funding is also available for conference attendance and consumables.
