Colleagues,

I would be grateful if you could provide me with details of the maximum word limits that your institution imposes on students submitting postgraduate research theses.

At Heriot-Watt University, we have begun to notice an increase in the number of theses exceeding our stated maxima on the grounds that certain disciplines require especially large word limits due to the extensive amount of qualitiative research undertaken in writing the thesis. I would therefore welcome details of examples where institutions set a larger word limit for certain disciplines, and reason(s) why this is permitted.

As always, I will be happy to post a summary of results up on the file archive.
