Dear All,

I am working for the Technology Strategy Board overseeing all technical aspects of their Innovation Platform on the Detection and Identification of Infectious Agents (one pager attached). As part of my scanning exercise I am interested in rapid/POC devices already in use in the UK (either NHS or private labs) for the detection of infectious agents. Whilst we are still working with the Department of Health and DEFRA to prioritise areas for development, in broad terms DH is interested in POC/rapid tests for the following:-

HAI - in particular MRSA, c.difficile and community acquired pneumonia

TB (latent and active)

Sepsis

STIs (Chlamydia and Gonorrhea).

As you're aware, antimicrobial resistance is an area of great concern so that technologies that help to reduce the inappropriate use of antibiotics - through, for example, distinguishing between viral and bacterial infections, are also of interest.

In addition to the above and separate to the Innovation Platform, I am interested in the possibility of using POC/rapid tests to screen pregnant woman for infectious diseases - currently rubella antibody, HIV, HepB and syphillis are assessed. Again I should be grateful for information on any hospitals or centres that are using POC/rapid tests to measure any of these analytes.

All comments welcome, I'm aware that for some of the anaytes POC tests aren't on the market and that for others there are some "less than desirable" tests around.

If you are a developer in this area please let me know and I will ensure that you are in our database for being invited to our workshops (in order to receive support for the Technology Stategy Board you must be a UK company or demonstrate a strong R&D presence in the UK).
