I was struck by the idea of a committee 'simplifying' the language so the rest of us can't make 'errors'. Here are two quotes advocating this:

"Orthodoxy means not thinking-not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness."

and

"It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words."

Newspeak as described by its perpetrators in 1984, a novel by George Orwell.

The whole world has been forced to agree on the same spelling for drug names - - and in all cases we have been forced to use the US name mostly because Americans could not spell. For example, they could not manage the complexity of cephalosporins, now cefalosporin [the ph baffled them]. Therefore we have moved to the equally illiterate ciclosporin because they did not understand the y in cyclo.

There are many more examples where US bad spelling has forced name changes but the most egregious is that we are to be forced to call adrenaline, epinephrine because adrenaline is a trade mark name in the US.

Dear colleagues,

Could I ask if anyone is sure of the proper name for this drug?

Cyclosporine has 1.7 million hits on Google, cyclosporin 0.9 million, ciclosporin 1.1 million.

www.bioanalytics.co.uk - www.forensic-toxicology.org

I am updating our SOP and even the title is presenting a problem.

Many thanks,

Sean Maguire
