Plants & Us
is an exhibition and web resource www.plantsandus.org.uk/ developed by the John Innes Centre, Norwich which allows students (or
anyone!) to vote on line for the plant they think has most influenced our
lives. The permanent exhibition is on display in the John Innes Centre
Conference Facility foyer and a mini A-frame easy to assemble version is
available for loan. We are also willing to
reproduce and customise the exhibition in space you may have available
and provide voting slips so you can have your own vote. Here's what a teacher from Hull
said:
"Just wanted to let you know how useful the Plants and Us website has
been for our Plant topic. I teach Years 5 and 6 and the information was very
useful as a starting point for me and the children found it very easy to access
and it inspired them to share what they learnt from this site and go on to find
out more about plants and their uses. It was set out simply and the amount of
writing was just right - not too much to read but very interesting. Today is our
'ICT suite time' so we will be able to vote. Discussing the
choices got the children talking and what seemed like a simple question to
them at first made them really think."
JIC staff, readers of the Eastern Daily
Press, visitors to the Gressenhall Rural Life Museum, Norfolk, and
visitors to RHS Chelsea all voted for wheat and so
.........
Wheat - A Plant that Changed the
World -
we
gave them an exhibition all about
wheat, which was installed in
St Nicholas Barn at Gressenhall Rural Life Museum, Dereham, Norfolk http://www.museums.norfolk.gov.uk/default.asp?Document=200.50 and is replicated on the website www.allaboutwheat.info. The information can be used in
science, food tech or history as it traces the development of the crop and its
uses from the stone age through to the modern day
and raises issues such as non-food crops, biofuels and
GM.
Where's the F in Food?
Five a Day, foam, fish,
folates, fresh or frozen and much much more! The Institute of Food Research
worked with Dr Ken http://www.dodifferent.co.uk/ to produce a show
for children of all ages exploring the fs in food in a fun
filled 20 minute action packed programme.
Finally, next year the John Innes
Centre is joining the growing throng of anniversaries by celebrating its
Centenary, check out the web site to find out more http:www.jic.ac.uk/centenary
