As luck would have it Toshiba reports that Linux Ubuntu 8.04 works with only a couple of trivial fixes on my specific laptop so I went ahead and installed the more cutting edge Linux Ubuntu 8.10. Now, having got ACPI basically working since I have no wish to barbecue a shrimp on the CPU I find reverting to a toshiba_apci module is far from trivial with the Ubuntu kernels. And Windows Vista Premium will not allow the touch pad to work in a fully functional way. So, best not go too close to that for now given the two hundred megabyte non-functioning nightmare Vista promises. At least I now understand why twenty something year old computer technicians look grey haired and old beyond their time. And why he smiles when I say I wish to resize the Longhorn partition and repartition the hard disk and install Linux. (At least the touch pad works with Linux)
