Damian, It's not directly what you're looking for and on a simpler level of code than you seem to be considering, but it might be worth taking a look at Steven Johnson's -Emergence- (Scribner 2001.) He looks at self programming systems and complex systems based on very simple programs or, as the cover says, "the connected lives of ants, brains, cities, and software." It may be better as a look at something DNA-like that gets in the way of designers and designs rather than the other way around.
