A fully-funded PhD studentship is available for a project starting in October 2009

The successful candidate will use laser spectroscopy to investigate molecular clusters inside superfluid liquid helium nanodroplets.  The aim will be to use these as model systems to explore the mechanism of solvation processes occurring in everyday chemistry.  The work will employ state-of-the-art techniques to tackle a problem of intense scientific interest. You will join a well-equipped, well-staffed and highly active research group that employs a variety of spectroscopic and mass spectrometric techniques to understand the properties of molecules, clusters and nanoparticles. 
   
Candidates must be strongly motivated and have a first degree background in chemistry, physics or a related subject. Applicants with a master's degree (MSci, MChem, MPhys or MSc) or equivalent in one of these fields is preferred.  The stipend is at the standard rate for UK PhD students. Because of restrictions imposed by the funding body, applications are open only to UK citizens and EU nationals who have been resident in the UK for a minimum of three years prior to the start of the project.
