Just a reminder about the Salford Comedy Conference coming up in June

The School of Media, Music and Performance & The Adelphi Research Institute present the
3rd ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL COMEDY CONFERENCE
4th - 5th June 2009
Call for Papers and Panels
We would like to invite papers and pre-constituted panels for our Third International Comedy Conference. Papers may focus on any aspect of comedy but we are especially interested in papers that address this year’s core subject:
‘Comics in the Frame’
In addition to the general call this year we will feature a special focus on ‘comedians on screen’, that is, stage comedians who have crossed over into the realm of the moving image. Sometimes this transition has proved successful and popular: Lee Evans, Jerry Lewis, Richard Pryor, Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Bill Cosby, Eddie Izzard. For other acts it has been less so: Morecombe and Wise, Julian Clary. When it comes to some others, such as Russell Brand, the jury may still be out.
Keynote address
Sharon Lockyer (Brunel University) ‘From Edinburgh Fringe to Global Screens: Lucas Walliams Comedy Partnership in the Spotlight’
Topics for this year’s focus might include:
· An appraisal of the work of individual comics or their shows
· Comedy acting: the difficulties, the art
· Character comedians such as Steve Coogan, Frank Randle or Peter Sellers
· Ensemble comedy: The Crazy Gang, Carry On, Saturday Night Live
· From page to screen: the problems of adapting comedy for film or TV
· From radio to television: The Mighty Boosh, Little Britain
This year, in addition to our normal conference proceedings, we hope to welcome representatives from the BBC’s comedy units to discuss the issues raised by broadcasting comedy, such as those created by the transition from radio to television. All proposals and any enquiries should be sent to the conference organisers:
