NHS Athens registration for HE students and teachers to provide access to the NLH resource – pilot project

The main aim of this pilot project is to test and develop a process whereby medical and nursing students may have access to nationally procured NHS Athens resources from the commencement of their education course (see eligibility criterion (p) http://www.library.nhs.uk/forlibrarians/content/corecontent/athens/eligibility); this is in full agreement with suppliers and with the encouragement of the GMC to ensure early integration of undergraduate education within the clinical environment.

The pilot began in May 2008, with the following institutions taking part in the first instance: University of Southampton, King’s College London, University College London. A small number of additional institutions (currently being confirmed) will be taking part during the latter part of the pilot, which is due to end on 31 July 2009. The pilot is focussing on reviewing the processes involved in registering higher education students and teachers for NHS Athens accounts and on capturing lessons learned.  Betsy Anagnostelis of UCL Library Services, who is coordinating the pilot on behalf of the current participants, will be providing progress reports to the Content and Collections Development Group.

Meanwhile, students of non-pilot institutions continue to have access to NHS Athens accounts only whilst on placement or attachment with NHS organisations.
