We at the eScholarship program of the California Digital Library at the Univeristy of California aare working on a hybrid approach right now, where we've got a hopefully sufficient number of documents manually tagged in order to do automatic classification on our legacy content, which will then be reviewed by a human being at some point. Going forward, we will be requiring submitters to choose terms from a controlled vocabulary. (Reply to me: [log in to unmask] and if you are putting your hand up then please say what you use (schema, etc) for that subject metadata). Thanks very muchly and merry Christmas!
