MLA London's training programme contains a number of ICT related courses that are relevant to people working in the cultural heritage sector.  Our training is open to all staff and volunteers.

Course prices range from £80 to £110 for the full day course and include course papers/booklets, lunch, and refreshments.  Renaissance London has agreed to fund a limited number of places on each course so London museums can attend free (priority will be given to non Hub and non National London based museums). An introduction to Managing Digital Projects

Tuesday 6th January 2008

This course is for staff and volunteers who are considering starting a digital project.

 

Focusing upon delivering digital resources and digitisation (the conversion to digital formats) this one day course will introduce to the skills needed to  when commissioning or carrying out digital projects. Starting with effective project management through fundraising and budgeting/costing issues the course will offer real life examples and tools to enable effective management including tendering and selecting service providers. The course will encourage discussion, questions and debate plus provide a structured environment to learn about the management tools of the digital project trade.

 

The day will be led by Simon Tanner (King's Digital Consultancy Services), a leading thinker and consultant in how the digital domain relates to library, museum and archiving digital strategies.

 

The day will include sessions on:

 

·         Planning and project management - Introducing the fundamentals of project management to enable effective planning and risk management 

·         Fundraising and budgeting - Transforming plans into costed proposals for raising funds. How to work with funding bodies to get what you both want

·         Tendering and selecting services - How to tender for and select services. Whether to work in-house or outsource and how to use a decision matrix, how to decide if e-commerce will work for your organisation

 

Delegates will leave the day with:

 

·         Knowledge of how to plan, budget and manage a digital project

·         Confidence to know the tools and means to effectively manage digital projects

·         Awareness of the way other museums, libraries, and archives manage digital projects

An introduction to e-commerce for museums, libraries, and archives

This course is for staff and volunteers from organisation in the museums, libraries, and archives sector who are considering e-commerce.

 

The day is an introduction to e-commerce and how museums, libraries, and archives may be able to apply this technology to improve their revenue stream. It will help organisation evaluate whether e-commerce is suitable for their organisation, how e-commerce works in the sector, and what are the best ways to plan for implementation of e-commerce across an organisation.  The day will encourage discussion, questions and debate plus provide a structured environment to learn about e-commerce.

Understanding online audiences for cultural heritage organisations

Date/Time: Thursday 19th March 2009 1000 - 1630

Venue: South Camden City Learning Centre, Charrington Street, London NW1 1RG

 

Increasing audiences are using the internet to help them choose what to see and where to go.  In response to this museums are increasing   their online presence and seeking to capture these audiences at their websites, either to engage them online, or to persuade them to visit the museum physically.  But how can we understand our online audiences, and make sure that we are delivering what the potential audience wants?

 

This one day course will look at the some of the issues around online audiences and help museums understand how to understand them and the data they provide.  The day will cover:

 

·         Setting the Scene - What are the benefits of gathering and analysing data on our online audiences?  

·         Web statistics - What can we measure? And what is useful to analysis

·         What tools organisations can use to collect web statistics (practical)

·         Online questionnaires - what tools are available? What can we get from them? How to analysis them

·         Combining data channels and developing strategy

 

The day has been designed to provide delegates with theoretical and practical knowledge and as such will be held at a computer lab in South Camden City Learning College.
