Dear Rasmus,

I am basically using the field so as to make notes in it. Because my assignment is quite complex (solid-state, 280 residues) I like to keep notes on each spin system (e.g. what my provisional assignment is, how sure I am of it, what sort of peaks I have based my assignment on etc.). Previously I had written this information in a separate spreadsheet  - one disadvantage to this is that OpenOffice and Analysis don't run alongside one another very happily (the graphics are always slow to catch up when switching from one to another - someone else on the list noted this once before). I also thought it would be good, if all the data could be kept together, i.e. if the notes could be stored within my Analysis project. I spoke to Tim about this, and I think it may in part be due to our conversations that he increased the size of the Details box in Analysis2 and has given it its own tab.
So really it depends on whether other people also want to the facility to be able to make extensive notes on their spin systems - for solid-state NMR or larger proteins (where paper notes can easily get out of hand) I would have thougth this could be quite useful. I guess probably an increase from 254 to 1000 or 2000 characters would be sufficient, too, if you feel that having no limit at all is undesirable.

Thanks for your help,

Vicky

Dear Vicky,

The limit comes from the data model. ResonanceGroup.details has a built-in
limit of 254 characters. Generally we try to put limits in wherever we
can. Unlimited text strings take more space in databases, and it makes
sense for user interfaces to assume relatively short text strings if this
is what people mostly have.

So, the question is if you can convince us to change the basic data model.
That may depend whether we think your way of using this is likely to be
general, or whether we would recommmend people to do this ni other ways.
Could you describe in more detail what kind of things you have been
entereing in that field?

Yours,

Rasmus

Hi,

I've been entering things into the 'Details' section of the Spin Systems
Dialog and have run into trouble because the text length seems to be
limited to 254 characters. Is there any way of extending this (ideally
to unlimited)?

Thanks,

Vicky
