Dear ARLIS/NA members,
On behalf of the Communications and Publications Committee it is my
pleasure to announce the launch of a new ARLIS/NA Online Publication:
Fine Arts and Visual Resources Librarianship:
A Directory of Library Science Degree Programs in North America
Compiled by:
Sarah Carter, Rebecca Cooper, and Karan Rinaldo
In 2008, the Professional Development Committee of ARLIS/NA undertook a
project to update the 1995 publication Library Schools in the United States
and Canada: Educational Opportunities for Careers in Fine Arts and Visual
Resources Librarianship. Members of the PDC crafted a survey composed of a
broad range of questions, aimed at helping prospective students determine
the range and depth of course offerings and support services available to
those interested in art librarianship, visual resources, and related
careers.
This online publication compiles and presents the extensive survey
information from 39 of the 56 ALA accredited library science programs in
North America and includes at least concise information about each North
American program. This free, online publication is intended to provide
useful information to those seeking a master’s degree in library and
information science with the goal of entering into art librarianship or
visual resources as a career.
Program Entry Information
The library and information science program entries in this new publication
expand the fields of information from the 1995 Library Schools in the
United States and Canada: Educational Opportunities for Careers in Fine
Arts and Visual Resources Librarianship to include internships, campus
resources, deadlines and financial assistance. The sections below are
included in each full entry.
Programs Offered: Lists the major LIS programs and specializations.
Specialized Courses Offered: Lists specific courses in art and visual
resources librarianship and how they are offered (evening, day, off-site,
distance education)
Credit and Exemption: Details how credits will transfer from other
departments and schools.
Internships: Lists the number and type of internships/practicums available.
Campus Resources: Lists cultural resources such as museums or galleries
available to students.
Admission deadlines: Details Semester deadlines for application.
Financial Assistance: Lists the types of funding and assistance available
and deadlines for application.
This ARLIS/NA Online Publication is offered to users free of charge and can
be accessed from the ARLIS Website at:
http://www.arlisna.org/resources/onlinepubs/degree_programs_directory.pdf

[Arlisanz-l] Poster collections - seeking feedback
Friday, 5 December, 2008 4:35:24

To:[log in to unmask]

Dear all,
The Research Library at the NGA is currently working on a large collection
of posters that are part of our Special Collections division. We have begun
to separate these posters from our ephemera collection and realised that
they form quite a distinct documentary collection in themselves - we
collect art exhibition posters (or posters from any visual arts related
event) from Australian and international galleries. We are quite interested
in developing this collection documenting visual arts related activity,
particularly in Australia. We were wondering whether any other institutions
out there had a poster collection? I would be quite interested in hearing
any feedback about the contents of your collection and any key focus areas.
Do you collect the publishing output of your own institution (we have
aspired to collect all National Gallery exhibition posters), and do you
make this collection accessible through your catalogue? Any feedback on any
aspects of your collection would be appreciated!

Many thanks,
Melissa Cadden

[ARLIS-L] Call for submissions (cross-posted)

To:[log in to unmask]

Dear Librarian or Information Professional,

Amanda Gluibizzi of The Ohio State University and I have developed a brief
but, we hope, elastic outline for a Handbook of Art and Design
Librarianship. We think it might be a solid companion to Joan Benedetti's
Art Museum Libraries and Librarianship (Scarecrow, 2007). We’re looking
for chapters from individuals within the world of art and design libraries
in academic settings on a broad range of topics grounded in theory or
research and written from a practical perspective. We’re also hoping that
the library profiles at the conclusion of the publication would directly
reflect those discussed in the essays.

If you think you’d be interested in contributing to the publication, please
let us know by responding to this message and responding to the following
points:
The chapter--from the outline below--within which your contribution could
reside
Working title
Expected date of submission of manuscript
Estimated length of chapter
Abstract
Name, mailing address, e-mail address, phone number, and fax number of the
contributor
The art and design library or libraries to which you would be referring in
the chapter

Handbook of Art and Design Librarianship
PREMISE
While much attention has been paid to art librarianship as it exists in
museum settings, comparatively less notice has been taken of the
development of academic and art-and-design- school art librarianship as a
distinct focus. However, the skills of subject specialists in the arts and
their advocacy on behalf of their patrons are fundamental elements in vital
art libraries that fully support and anticipate the needs of artists,
designers, architects, and the historians who study these disciplines.
Building on the core competencies and standards established by the Art
Libraries Society of North America, the Handbook of Art and Design
Librarianship will examine methods of innovative librarianship in academic
and art-school libraries throughout North America. With a focus on the
intersection of “best practice” and best opportunities, this book will
bring together the philosophies and realities of the most creative
librarians working in the field of art librarianship today and will serve
as a field guide to academic art libraries in the twenty-first century.
