The
Integrated Census Microdata (I-CeM) Project
This
major new £1.05 million project is funded by the UK Economic and Social
Research Council and located in the Department of History at the University of
Essex, in collaboration the UK Data Archive. In conjunction with key commercial
partners, the project will create an enhanced census data collection for Great
Britain covering the period 1851 to 1911. As a result a number of new positions
are being created. In the first instance we are looking to recruit a Project
Manager and Research Officer.
Project
Manager
An
experienced manager is now being sought to play a leading role in this
high-profile project. The postholder will be responsible for co-ordination of
the project and ensuring that the project plan is carried out successfully and
is delivered on time and on budget. This will include oversight of both
financial and staffing issues as well as the effective promotion of the
project. They will also be responsible for liaison with national shakeholders,
including the funder and commercial partners; organisation of user consultation
workshops and Advisory Board meetings; and contributing to the writing of
outreach materials and guides, as appropriate. Applicants must have previous
management experience with a working knowledge of project management
techniques. Excellent communication, organisation and problem solving skills
are essential. Appointment to this full-time post will be for a fixed term to
March 2011 in the first instance. Secondment will be considered. Further
details and information on how to apply are at: http://gs12.globalsuccessor.com/fe/tpl_essex01.asp?newms=jj&id=40831
Research
Officer
The
Research Officer will specialise in the construction of standardised
occupational coding schemes, harmonised over time and, where possible, mapped
to other classificatory schemes. The successful candidate will also be
responsible for investigating the integration and harmonisation of coding
schemes for other key census variables, including family and household
indicators and birthplace geography. The postholder will also be expected to
support the promotion of the project, contribute to meetings and workshops and
the writing of reports, teaching materials and user guides. Applicants should
be educated to degree level and ideally have experience of research in which methodical
working and problem solving skills were a key part. They should be IT literate,
and a knowledge of the development of large-scale data resources would be a
distinct advantage. This is a fixed term post to 2011 in the first instance.

Additional

The
project will also be looking to recruit a number of technical specialists. In
particular it will be looking to recruit a GIS specialist to
create a standardised parish-level GIS to link to the census data and to
produce a web-based mapping tool in order to enable users to visualise the
data, over time for various administrative areas and a Programmer
who will devise programmes for the semi-automatic coding of
character string variables (occupations and birthplaces) using natural language
programming (NLP) methodologies.
