Science Communications & New Media Assistant (p/time position)

RDS (Research Defence Society) is a small, non-profit organisation representing scientists in the public and political debate about the use of animals in research, explaining why it is necessary and how it is conducted. We believe that research using animals should be well regulated, and conducted humanely and only when there is no alternative.

Job description

  • Writing for the Research Headlines webpages. A good opportunity to develop writing skills: the ability to select good information and summarise it in lay terms to deadline is essential.
  • Contributing other new or revised content for a new website.
  • Maintaining our database of press cuttings.
  • Researching and developing innovative ways of using the Internet to support positive messages and better visibility for high-quality animal research.

 

Person description

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be enthusiastic about explaining the role of well-regulated animal research in scientific and medical advances.
  • Have a biological sciences degree and have an appetite for (and preferably proven experience in), conveying complex science in a clear, concise fashion.
  • Be a well-organised, confident team player.
  • Have good IT skills, preferably experience with databases, particularly Microsoft Access.
  • Be creative, knowledgeable and experienced in relation to the use of multimedia and the Internet, including technical knowledge of file formats and how they work, streaming video & podcasts etc, understanding of copyright.

 

Conditions

1.5 days (10 hours per week) – flexitime, subject to prior negotiation, £9.50 per hour.

 

Applicants need to be London-based. The position will be at the RDS office, is available now and is likely to run for up to one year.
