We have had some 25,000 records scanned and they can be viewed and retrieved at the click of a button - literally in seconds. They are totally secure but on our server. They have an audit trail for legal purposes should we have to prove what and when information has been added or removed. We have linked this with our OPAS database which we use to manage our day to day activity and our current incoming paper. We have  used MD technology  www.md-technology.co.uk to scan all our terminated files and they are currently scanning the live ones. Do call me if you need further info 023 80794156.

Hello all, 

I have been asked to find out information on the storage of medical records 
electronically and I really don't know where to start.  The company in question 
has a problem with storage so it is their aim to scan all paperwork to keep 
electronically and then the original soft copy would be shredded.  

Has anyone got any experience of this, what safeguards do I need to ensure 
are in place and what are the legal implications to this? Any other practical 
advice?
