CYMDEITHAS YR AMGUEDDFEYDD

Help us to improve collections knowledge
The Museums Association has launched a consultation into ways in which the sector can improve collections knowledge, asking for your thoughts about what can be done to both develop and share knowledge. The aim of the consultation paper is to stimulate discussion in order for clear ideas to emerge to ensure the sustainability of the knowledge within the sector and to continue in the development of new knowledge and expertise in the future.

Responses will help the MA to develop its own work in this area and inform other organisations in the sector. The deadline for responses is Monday 15 December.

MIS AMGUEDDFEYDD AC ORIELAU

Plan Now For Museums At Night 2009
There will be no Museums and Galleries Month as such in May 2009. Instead Culture24 will promote and support the Museums at Night Weekend in May 2009, a growing and successful part of Museums and Galleries Month. This is linked to Nuit des Musees which takes place on Saturday May 16 2009 and is supported by the Council of Europe.

So start planning now for your Museums at Night Weekend which will take place on Friday May 15, Saturday May 16 and Sunday May 17 2009. All museums and galleries and heritage attractions are welcome to take part and benefit from the European-wide publicity.

Culture24 will work with the MGM team to develop a UK-wide promotion with brand and PR support, subject to funding available, to ensure that UK museums can build on the achievements of previous years.

HYFFORDDIANT A CHYNHADLEDDAU

Designing for disability: digital media in context - 5th December, London
Accessibility in the digital environment isn’t about ticking off compliance checklists: it is about doing things because they make good design sense, because the users who your design decisions affect matter and are worth involving in the process. A wide range of technical experts will look at issues confronting cultural organisations in today’s digital world. They will demystify web accessibility issues and explain accessible digital media in all its current forms, whether online or in-gallery, accessed via phones or PDAs.

Object handling and packing: training day - 16th December, London
Loans in and out, movements out of store, new displays. There are many reasons why objects are moved, and correct handling and packing can reduce the risk of damage. These are fundamentally important skills and every museum professional needs either to learn or update their knowledge of current practice. This intensive training day teaches you how to: assess objects; identify how and where best to support them; use the right equipment and materials; and ensure the safety of objects and handlers. Each session is led by a specialist with up-to-date, first-hand knowledge and experience.

Personal Liability of Curators, Registrars and Museum Managers - 4th December, London
In this seminar, we shall examine the personal risks and responsibilities that confront the individual museum officer or freelance curator when conducting professional business.  Many museum practitioners are unaware of recent legal developments that could lead to their being sued personally for dealings in cultural objects or being prosecuted for alleged participation in crimes concerning such property. Nor is there full awareness of the ways

in which an ill-informed museum manager can increase the risk of legal liability on the part of his employer with potential knock-on consequences for the manager’s own pocket should the employer museum seek redress.

IDeA relaunch their culture and sport site
The Improvement and Development Agency for local government (IDeA) have redesigned their leisure and culture resource to integrate all material from the ‘cultural connections’ and ‘culture and sport improvement’ sections. The new 'culture and sport' resource provides policy and strategy information, improvement support - including the new improvement toolkit - and a variety of good practice, advice and learning.

Culture and sport contains four sections:

 - Improvement strategy for the culture and sport sector: containing links to information on local area agreements (LAAs), comprehensive performance assessment (CPA) and the new comprehensive area assessment (CAA)

- Support for councils: where you will find information on self-assessment, challenge opportunities and support for elected members

- Regional improvement networks: including links to what is going on in your region
- Sharing and learning: where you will find information and case studies showing how councils are improving services and other agencies are supporting them

Putting the Complete Calendars of State Papers Online
British History Online is pleased to announce that 200 volumes in the AHRC-funded State Papers project are now live. The goal of the project is to complete the digitisation of the Calendars of State Papers, in order to make these important documents freely accessible to the academic community and the general public alike; we are able to ensure a reliably searchable result by creating verbatim transcriptions of at least 99.9% accuracy. We plan to make the remaining 150 books in this project live within the next twelve months.

Mine tragedy find goes on display
A tapestry found in a charity donation bag telling the story of an explosion in 19th Century Wrexham is to go on display at the town's museum. It is embroidered with a poem about a 15-year-old boy, Peter Jones, who was killed in the blast at Brynmally colliery in Moss on 13 March, 1889. Staff at Claire House children's hospice in Bromborough found the tapestry in a donated bag of clothes. It can be seen at Wrexham County Borough Museum's Collections Centre.

Vatican sends back Parthenon head
The Vatican has handed over a piece of the north frieze of the Parthenon temple to the Acropolis museum in Athens on a one-year loan. The head of a youth is thought to be from a slab, most of which is lost, of the 2,400-year-old temple's frieze. A Vatican museums official said he did not know if the loan would be extended, or if other pieces might be returned.
