UPBEAT- UK Better Eating and Activity in pregnancy Trial

One in five UK women of childbearing age is clinically obese. Obese women are more likely to suffer from nearly every complication of pregnancy, including diabetes, and pre-eclampsia. This NIHR funded research programme will develop an individually tailored 'life style' package for obese pregnant women, working with them to change their diet and physical activity. The research consists of a number of linked studies and will develop and evaluate a complex behavioural intervention to improve pregnancy outcome, focusing on physical activity, dietary advice and group support. This will be conducted in accordance with the MRC framework for development and evaluation of RCTs for complex interventions to improve health.

The research programme is under the direction of Professor Lucilla Poston (Chief Investigator, KCL) and managed by the Maternal and Fetal Research Unit clinical trials team (Clinical Trials Manager Annette Briley). The multidisciplinary team funded by this NIHR programme include clinicians and scientists from the University of Newcastle, University College London, University of Manchester, University of York, University of Southampton and University of Glasgow. The research team will comprise a research dietitian, a psychologist, a research associate with physical activity expertise, a social scientist, research midwives and health trainers.
