Note the publication date, indicating J.D. may be (out)dated. However his discussion is fascinating. As I recall, he argues that Augustine and other unspecified Church fathers suggested that the faithful have the cross tattooed on their foreheads - or suggestions to that effect. I believe I have a copy somewhere :-)) and will hunt it down, but later. If I find anything utterly fascinating, I'll relay. If you read French, I recommend reading the whole book.
