Metadata Technical Officer

Salary: £31,711 - £38,391 with the potential to progress to £41,320

Reference: 14/08/MR

Application deadline: 17 December 2008

LSE Library is one of the world's greatest social science libraries, and serves a vibrant community of students and staff in the centre of London. The Library has a significant and growing collection of electronic resources and digital objects, including a research repository, electronic course readings, digitised materials, e-theses, datasets and audiovisual media. In order to support user access to this body of material it is vital that high-quality metadata is incorporated into the document storage systems. An exciting opportunity has arisen with this new post to provide technical support for metadata creation.

In this post you will investigate appropriate metadata formats for each application, based on your current knowledge of the field, and recommend suitable formats for use. You will then work with colleagues in the Bibliographic Services and Information Services teams to implement the metadata formats, and ensure that staff are adequately trained and supported in creating metadata. Quality of metadata is a primary concern for this post, and you will be involved in ensuring that quality checks are in place so that all metadata is accurate.

You will be educated to at least degree level or equivalent. You will have extensive technical knowledge, and experience working in further or higher education, of current metadata formats, as well as a technical understanding of harvesting services, and the associated XML schemas. You will have excellent general IT skills, be a good planner and communicator, and have a determination to deliver the best service for end-users. You will be able to work under pressure and on your own initiative as well as being an effective team worker.

We offer a final salary pension scheme, generous annual leave and excellent development and training opportunities.
