The most recent territorial sale I can think of is the sale of the Danish West Indies (now the US Virgin Islands) to the USA in 1917 for US$25 million. I understand the primary driver behind the purchase was concern on the part of the US government that Germany was about to annex Denmark, and might then build a naval base in the islands. Does anyone know of a more recent formal state-to-state territorial sale? m a r t i n ============================== Martin Pratt Director of Research International Boundaries Research Unit Department of Geography Durham University Durham DH1 3LE United Kingdom Tel: +44 (0)191 334 1964 Fax: +44 (0)191 334 1962 [log in to unmask] www.dur.ac.uk/ibru ==============================
