Hi Deborah, when you say that the responsibility rests with the publisher, whose responsibility is it to then re-format the electronic version so that it fits in with the student's requirements, for example, if a student would like the text in a different font and size and printed out? Also, are there times when it would be quicker to scan the material rather than wait for the publisher to respond, especially if the core material is short? Concerning braille, I would say that it is the HEI's responsibility to produce the core texts in braille (or re-formatted to produce a version to match the student's access requirements) but it is obviously up to individual institutions to allocate responsibility. The subject librarian requests the electronic format from the publishers through our acquisitions department - so the responsibility for converting text rests with the publisher. Although we process requests asap, and we do chase them up - this process is usually very slow. Another question in this area has arisen here: who is responsible for converting text into Braille?
