Subject: A letter to Obama

I am moved to write you by Ambassador Reginald Dumas' letter to Robert Zoellick, president of the World Bank.(attached)

I believe there are many people, as distinguished as yourselves, who, like many other people have been anguished by the state of Haiti, described by Guy Antoine long ago as an international crime scene.

I believe that we are at an historic juncture that opens up an opportunity to grab the attention of the world and to make a realistic appeal to the next president of the United States to change the policy of the United States towards Haiti. We might suggest that he could work out, perhaps with Haiti's neighbours and friends, a programme to release the Haitian people from their bondage and to help them to design and construct their own future and to guarantee their national integrity.

If each of you would recruit just two or three more as distinguished as yourselves I think we could attract to the cause of Haiti some powerful attention.

I would have written also to other people whose addresses I don't have, people like former Congrssman Ron Dellums, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Derek Walcott, Harry Belafonte, Danny Glover, Shridath Ramphal, Patrick Robinson, Aiistair McIntyre and other eminent people whose sympathies I believe would be with the Haitian people. If you have their addresses I would ask you to forward this appeal to them – if you think it makes sense. It would, I think be useful to recruit more academics, jurists and lawyers, writers and other creative artists, and public servants, elected, non-elected, retired and active.

My suggestion is that we compose a letter to President-elect Barrack Obama asking him to begin the process of finally emancipating Haiti.

I look forward to your response, suggestions and action

If you don't think this idea makes sense, please don't hesitate to tell me

John Maxwell
